In order to properly secure the shop and its contents, please observe the following basic points as well as exercising sound judgement when locking the shop and leaving after work. Failure to properly shut down and secure the shop could result in loss or damage to the building or equipment. Issues of concern include fires resulting from equipment left on, damage to property from hydraulics left under unsecured operation, or loss due to theft if the shop perimeter is not secured after employees leave.
Before leaving the shop, ensure that the following procedures are carried out:
1. turn off and secure all equipment
a. unplug and put away all welding equipment, plasma cutter, etc.
b. turn off all oxygen fuel equipment and bleed down regulators
c. unplug any fuel fired portable heaters and electric portable heaters
2. secure all solvents, chemicals, and other flammable fluids
a. cap any flammable liquid and store in appropriate cabinet
b. cap any fuel and store in appropriate cabinet
3. turn off all electrical and electronic equipment
a. unplug power tools and store them in appropriate tool boxes
b. put away diagnostic equipment in appropriate cabinets
c. do not turn off shop computer as anti-virus software runs at night
4. turn off water to any outside faucets
a. outside faucets may freeze or be left on causing a waste of water
5. put away all hands tools, hardware, or related items
6. secure all windows and doors
