Always park the vehicle in reverse gear with the parking brake fully engaged and the front wheels turned in the correct direction.
Begin by parking the vehicle in appropriate spot, and then determine which way to turn the wheel for safer parking:
--if on an uphill slope turn the wheels to the left if parked on the right side of the road
--if on an uphill slope turn the wheels to the right if parked on the left side of the road
--if on a downhill slope turn the wheels to the right if parked on the right side of the road
--if on a downhill slope turn the wheels to the left if parked on the left side of the road
By turning the wheels in the above fashion, if the unattended vehicle begins to roll away the wheels will contact the curb and slow or stop the vehicle.
With the vehicle parked appropriately, follow the below six steps for safe parking.
Begin by following the procedure for smooth engagement to reverse gear in higher mileage cars:
1. Depress the clutch and hold
2. Shift to 1 st gear
3. Shift to 2 nd gear
4. Shift to reverse
a. always make sure reverse is fully engaged
b. if reverse is not fully engaged repeat steps #2 and #3 while fully depressing and holding the clutch
Now:
5. Fully engage the parking brake
6. Turn off the vehicle
