(Labor)(General)(Protocol)
Cleaning Protocol for Regular Shop Cleaning

Job: Level 1 Shop Assistant

The Level 1 Shop Assistant has the primary responsibility of performing the cleaning tasks described on the following pages on a regularly scheduled weekly basis. Currently, this cleaning is performed on Mondays; however, it can be adjusted to suit the schedule of the part-time Shop Assistant. Regardless of which day of the week the cleaning occurs, the weekly cleaning must be carried out on the same day every week to ensure a consistently clean shop.

The target times noted below do not have to be rigidly adhered to but instead reflect how long the work typically takes given the average weekly work load in the shop. Actual times may vary and emphasis is placed on proper cleaning and not on hurried cleaning. Typically it will take from 2 to 2.5 hours to perform the weekly cleaning tasks; however, when in doubt, it is better to clean more rather than less. With the additional monthly cleaning duties, the total weekly cleaning time will range from 4 to 6 hours depending upon the week.

The primary purpose of weekly cleaning is to address the areas of the shop that might be missed during the regular daily cleanings. Dusting in corners, mopping, removing grime from shelves, cleaning the bathroom area, and other detailed cleaning is extremely important for quality shop operation. Quality auto repair work cannot be done in a filthy or disorganized environment and vigilant cleaning is in an important part of the repair process. In addition to the “clean as you go” approach undertaken by the shop technicians during the course of the actual repair work, this additional weekly cleaning keeps the shop environment tidy.

The use of Simple Green cleaning agent (referred to below) is almost always a reduced solution used from one of the two spray bottles. The spray bottle on the work bench contains a Simple Green reduced by approximately 1/3 water while the spray bottle on the sink counter contains a solution reduced using about 2/3 water. The heavier concentration of Simple Green on the workbench is to be used for cleaning in the shop work area, the tool rooms and other greasier areas. The weaker solution is to be used while cleaning the sink, bathroom, service stand area, parts area, and office area.

Also all mopping should be done with a well wrung mop head—sloshing water around the floor does not clean it. A damp mop head run over a swept floor will pick up dust and debris which can then be deposited into the mop bucket. It is also crucial to change the mop water often.

Please see illustration, Shop Footprint, for location of areas outlined below.
