JGA neither uses nor recommends coolant filters on small and medium sized vehicles that are driven for personal use. While research has shown that high quality screw on style coolant fitlers with by-pass valves are beneficial for large commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers, the benefit vs. cost ratio for personal vehicles does not warrant the use of coolant filters.
Furthermore, a number of inexpensive coolant filters availabe in the aftermarket are merely an inline filter with a fine mesh screen designed to be installed in the upper radiator hose between the engine and radiator. This inline design not only fails to offer the proper filtration, but when it clogs it restricts the flow of coolant which in turn leads to overheating and possible engine failure. These types of coolant filters should be avoided--they offer no by-pass protection.
If a client wishes to use a commercial style coolant filter, such as the type used on a tractor-trailer, JGA will order and and install the high qualtiy unit; however it does not negate the need for regular coolant flushes during the re-occurring 30,000 mile maintenance.
Again, based on research from both academia and this shop, coolant filters for personal vehicles are not needed as the coolant is flushed every 30,000 miles.
